The district is situated west of the city centre close to the Elbe river and the harbor.
St. Pauli is probably one of the best knowen districts of Hamburg. Between glossy and grubby, the red light district, FC St. Pauli, the Reeperbahn and the Heiligengeistfeld the manifold district attracts lots of different people. As a traditional entertainment district it has a large variety of music clubs, pubs and nightclubs as well as many theaters, such as on Spielbudenplatz: St. Pauli Theater, Schmidt´s Theater and Schmidt's Tivoli and the Opernhaus.
The gastronomic offer is vast and varied, from a sausage up to the star cuisine there are offers from all parts of the world. On the Heiligengeistfeld, the Football World Cup 2006 and 2010 was one of the largest public viewing events in Europe.
Formerly St. Pauli was one of the poorest quarters of Hamburg, now it is one of the main entertainment and touristic sites of the city. From the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken, many harbor cruises start and the Elbe ferries launche. These are also the swimming museums “Rickmer Rickmers" and the "Cap San Diego". The Erotic Art Museum, the Hamburg Schulmuseum and the Abwasser- und Sielmuseum also have interesting exhibitions. Also an interesting sightseeing objekt is the Alter Elbtunnel.
Close to the Elbe in the Bernhard-Nocht-Strasse, the Bernhard-Nocht Institutfür Tropenmedizin is located. In the immediate vicinity of the Deutscher Wetterdienst (formerly Seewetteramt) and the Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie is located.

In the north of the district are held in the exhibition halls, the public and trade fairs of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH. In the immediate vicinity of the exhibition halls is Heinrich Hertz Tower also known as a Fernsehturm and "Tele Michel" and the CCH, the Congress Centrum Hamburg, offering rooms for meetings and events. The adjacent green space "Planten un Blomen" is one of the most beautiful parks in Germany.
Because of the central location, good infrastructure and a wide offer of restaurants and music clubs, St. Pauli became a very popular residential area. Rapidly rising rents indicate the housing market. Rents arise particularly in the locations close to the Elbe river with more and more lofts and loft-style apartments.
